My experience in Mexico has made me appreciate my life a whole lot more.  I feel God is calling me to become more involved in ministry.  I also feel God is calling me to become part of the educational system, since I have had such a wonderful experience both here in the U.S. and in Mexico.

I can’t believe it has been four years since I went on my first mission trip to Mexico.  I have learned so much and my faith has grown in so many ways.  In September I will be attending Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.

I joined the staff at Urban Christian Ministries in 1980.  I still thank God for Audley McLean.  I truly don’t think that I would be in full time ministry today without the learning experience at U.C.M.  Audley introduced me to the suburban church (I had never spoken in that setting).  He introduced me to Christian radio and prison ministry, as well as Christian Summer Camp.

These were all new experiences for me.  U.C.M. taught me how to preach in urban inner-city churches, as well as in quiet suburban ones.  My U.C.M. experience enabled me to develop Project L.E.E. (Learning Earning Experience).  U.C.M., was, and is still, a God directed element.  Thanks to God and to U.C.M., I enjoy full time Christian Ministry.

God lead me to this place in 1981, and it was one of the greatest things that ever happened to me.  Initially, I was hired to work in the Budget Store.  Later, I was blessed to become U.C.M.’s youth director.  We ministered in the Buffalo Public Schools, and established the Teenage Alternative Program.

In 1991, I was appointed to the position of Executive Director of U.C.M.  Years of personal Christian maturity followed; grooming me for future work.  In 2001, I began to hear God’s call to go beyond the comforts of U.C.M. and Buffalo.  I was to serve abroad; after experiencing some mission trips to St. Vincent of the Grenadines.

On October 24, 2005, I left the United States of America to become a full time missionary with S.V.G. Ministries.  God has greatly blessed my time on the Island.  I am very thankful for the U.C.M. years of experience.

I once was in the Kids Club Program and have recently come back to volunteer in the Food Pantry.  Since being at U.C.M., and seeing familiar faces, I miss being there.  Even though I originally was doing the volunteer work for my college class, I am going to continue volunteering at U.C.M.  I’ve seen a lot of changes that have taken place at U.C.M. and how U.C.M. has progressed even further than when I was in Kids Club.  I am proud to say I volunteer at U.C.M. and once was a Kids Club member.

Everybody has something that means the world to them.  Everybody has something that helps them feel like they are loved.  For some it is jewelry, for others it is video games, but for me, Donte Smith, it is U.C.M.  This organization is good for a lot of things.  It keeps kids off the streets, it teaches them about God, and how the Bible can help with daily life problems.  This place has done a lot for me.  It helped me get off the streets, and forward my life to better things.  I’ve made true friends here and they treat me like a son.  As you can see Urban Christian Ministries means a lot to me.

“One thing I learned at U.C.M. is to care and love people.  A couple of things I got out of it is to treat people the same way you want to be treated.  Act right or you won’t get what you want.  At Bible Study sessions every Tuesday and Thursday, we learn more about God and Jesus.  Another thing I got out of U.C.M. is the Sign Language lessons.  If someone only speaks sign language, we would have to communicate with our hands, not mouths.”

Shaniya Wingard

P.S.  Thank You Sister Ruby for your dedication to our children and for teaching sign language classes.
